Does frost damage turfgrass?
Does frost damage turfgrass? No, the frost itself will not. However, if you golf, you might encounter a frost delay at the course on cold mornings. This is due to the fact that if you walk or drive across turfgrass that is frost covered, you will shatter the frozen cells of the leaves.
Here is a photograph of frost damage – footprints of someone who walked across a frozen lawn to check to see if it was frozen. I guess they got his answer.
Since the turfgrass is growing so slowly, it is unlikely that this damage will be reversed in the time remaining during the season. Once the frost has melted, the cells become pliable again and it is safe to walk or drive across the turfgrass.
Strange, but true. So, the take-home message here is that frost is just frozen water resting upon blades of grass temporarily. Unless you travel across it and damage the cell structure of the leaves it is quickly reversible
